Beaches

The wide, pale golden sands of Playa del Mattoral run for the entire length of the Jandia beach resort (approx 4km). There are calm stretches which are ideal for swimming as well as spots favoured by surfers and there are, of course, diving and surfing centres in the town.

Things to Do

This sunny resort is sheltered by the Pico de la Zarza mountain and, if you're feeling active, you can in fact walk along the waters edge all the way up to Costa Calma (17km) or climb the mountain for spectacular views over the west coast.

Jandia is ideally placed to explore the virgin beaches and remote villages of the west coast and a 4x4 safari across the rugged interior will reward you with amazing views.

From Morro Jable harbour you can take a cruise around the south coast in a catamaran, yacht or even a pirate ship. Alternatively, you can discover the colourful underwater world through the porthole windows of the subcat. Deep-sea fishing trips are also popular, particularly sport fishing for marlin and swordfish. In addition, a daily ferry runs from Morro Jable to Las Palmas on Gran Canaria.

The beach is, for the most part, separated from the wide, palm-lined main strip by a protected, ecological strip of salt marsh. Along this side of the strip there is large lawned area, a children's playground and regularly positioned boardwalks providing easy access to the beach. At the end of the main strip, you can continue along the beachfront promenade, which also has a jogging and cycling track, into the old part of town and Morro Jable harbour.

Out and About

The main strip is lined with shops, restaurants and pavement cafes offering a full range of menus.

The Jandia weekly market is held on Thursdays next to the Cosmo Shopping Centre on the main strip. Costa Calma (18km) holds a market on Wednesdays and Sundays and there is also a farmers market on a Sunday at the Oasis Park.

There are many artistic sculptures around the island but the statues of the children, located on one of the roundabouts as you approach the resort, is particularly striking. There is also a huge whale skeleton on the beach of Jandia, where you can't fail to spot the Jandia Lighthouse, which houses an information centre.

Nearby Attractions

Nearby you have the world famous Sotavento Beach, which hosts the Windsurfing and Kiteboarding World Cup (15km) or, you could jump on the free shuttle bus to the lovely Oasis Park (27km) and stroll around the animal park and botanical gardens.
