Sea Fishing

Availability of fresh live bait can be a real problem, to overcome this I have come up with a very simple method of insuring I have a supply whenever needed.
You will need; 20 hooks, I use Kammasan B950u sizes 2-6/0(very sharp and strong but not to thick in the wire). A spool of hook length, I use Sunset Amnesia 15lb-35lb in black or clear (knots well and is virtually memory free) A chopping board or piece of plywood around 12-16inches long, some tin foil a domestic freezer, and a wide mouth food flask.
The procedure is very simple; Tie 6 inches of hook length to your chosen size of hook, then to the other end tie a 2-inch loop. Take your live bait lets say your using lugworm and thread at least two worms(depending on the size of worms you have) onto the hook as normal so you then have a nice sized bait.
Place the ready baited hook onto your board and repeat this until the board is full. Then place the board into your freezer leave for twelve hours until completely frozen.

Remove the board and individually take the baits off and wrap in kitchen foil this will stop the baits from getting freezer burn and keep them separate when in transit. I then place the baits in a plastic bag in 10-20 depending on the size of bag used.
The bait is transported in a wide mouth food flask to insure the bait stays frozen at all times and access to the bait is easy.
When making your traces all you have to do is instead of tying hooks to your hook lengths just tie a loop of two inches, this then enables you to loop your frozen ready baited hooks to your trace just like as if you were attaching a normally tied freshwater hook to nylon.
Once you have attached the baited hook to your rig you are ready to fish, immediately the bait hits the water the bait defrosts and the juices are released the bait then fishes as well as a fresh bait. This I have proven by fishing two rods side by side on many occasions and there has been no difference in the performance of
the two baits if anything the frozen bait is better because it always lands in the sea
fully intact and casts further.
Coarse fishing tips

When fishing with artificial baits I find the enterprise tackle range to be very good especially the sweet corn in the various colours. One idea which I find to be effective is to keep the artificial bait in the juice or liquid of your chosen natural bait the night before you fish and also during your trip, I then change the hook bait on a regular basis to keep a good flavour trail going into the swim.
Carp fishing tips
While winter carp fishing I have found old traditional baits can work the best especially maggots and flavoured luncheon meat.
My favourite colour for maggots is red and usually I fish 3-5 on a hair rig in conjunction with a small pva bag containing about a quarter of a pint of dead (I tend to freeze them to kill them) ones. Of course you will have to thaw them out well before your trip to make sure they don't contain too much moisture.

Flavoured luncheon meat is an excellent winter bait as the smaller nuisance fish are not so active so tend to leave it alone. I prefer the nice and spicy from van den eyend, but also from van den eyend the scopex is a good fish catcher as well. If you do not have any nuisance fish in your water then I would use all these baits mentioned all year round as an alternative to boilies and pellets.
Pike fishing
When using dead baits for pike fishing a preferred method is to inject your bait with a fish oil to give it added attraction. The only problem I find is the use of a syringe and needle can be quite hazardous especially in the wrong or clumsy hands. I use a method I came upon accidentally; I accidentally froze a bottle of fish oil with my dead baits and only realised what I had done on the bank. Not being a too patient angler I had to think of a way of using the oil in its solidified state, so I squeezed it onto the fish like you would put toothpaste on your brush. Well the rest is history! What a days pike fishing I had catching five double figure fish the best weighing in at 19lbs. Ever since that day I now freeze my different flavoured oils and use them in this way. My favourite is van den eynde liquid pellet and predator baits smelt oil.
