Finding Friends via Social Networking
Finding Friends via Social Networking

Forget the negative stereotypes about finding friends online. It’s fine, and there’s absolutely nothing weird or reprehensible about it. Read the expert tips below – and find new friends online with ease!

Show off your interests. Connecting over something you both like is easy as pie! If you have favorite hobbies, TV shows, etc., be sure to list them in your profile. Don’t hide your personality traits as well – let people appreciate the real “you”, and find more friends who are a good match.

Profile description isn’t everything. Yes, catchy one-liners can be attention-grabbing, but wrecking your head over them for days just isn’t worth it. The experts on online networking state that authenticity is what really matters. People out there are looking forward to meeting the real you – not a guru of catchphrases. Show off your beautiful “self” to the world, and the right people will get attracted to your profile.

Don’t be snobbish. We all have people whom we don’t like, and that’s normal. But being too snobbish will significantly limit your chances of finding friends online. Be more open to the opportunities that a social networking site provides. According to the experts, leaving your comfort zone once in a while can be very rewarding. Sticking with the same type of people, on the other hand, isn’t going to let you discover more sides to human interaction – and your personality.

Keeping Your Online Passwords Safe
Keeping Your Online Passwords Safe

Avoid common mistakes to keep your accounts safe.

Most of online surfers create their passwords carelessly, trying to make them easy-to-remember and short. All these things make the hackers’ job even more successful.

Your personal data

Many passwords include personal data of a person that is easy to find. Never use your birthday date, surname or name, address, the names of pets or children.

Commonly encountered passwords

People tend to make it easy and seek the way to make passwords that are easy to remember, however, they are in the list of the most common passwords and they are not secure. Never use the passwords like “1234”, “letmein”, “abcdefg”, and so on. Create complex random passwords.

Safe places

The worst idea is jotting down your passwords and keeping them nearby your computer. It is like you leave your keys under your front door. If you cannot remember your passwords, use a password manager.

Short passwords

The longer your password, the more secure it is. Using software to hack passwords, hackers are more likely to give up, when it takes too long. Each sign and letter in your password takes extra time to crack it. So create passwords with at least eight characters and make them complex.

Old passwords is a bad idea

Don’t use the same passwords for years. Changing your passwords regularly prevents hackers of stealing your information for extended period.

Mistakes to Avoid on Profile Pic
Mistakes to Avoid on Profile Pic

Putting your face on your profile is like saying everyone: I’m open and genuine. People may trust you easily and be willing to know you better. Avoid mistakes we compiled here to make your picture pop.

Not you

Your profile is your brand. When people see the flower or a celebrity pic as your main photo, they think that you hide something and won’t give another glance on your profile.

Group photos

It’s easy. How can a person identify you in the picture? Or maybe someone will catch the eye of a person, but it isn’t you. Avoid awkwardness and leave group pics for your Facebook albums.

Poor quality

Check the resolution. Some of the sites do not accept high-resolution photos, but at least make sure your face is well visible. Light is a very important – dark and unfocused picture won’t win your new friends.

Hiding your face

Different elements that cover the part of your face (e.g., sunglasses) are unnecessary. They create a barrier between you and your potential friends, and who wants to start a friendship with an obstacle?

Gloomy face

Your expression on the photo may influence the way people percept you. If you want to make new friends, snobbish or gloomy face won’t help. Capture people with your smiley face.

Social Networking Safety Tips

Ho to stay safe while networking online? There are many useful tips, but we’ve selected the most effective for this article.

Don’t post anything you may regret later. They say, what goes online stays online, and it’s absolutely true. Even if you delete an unwanted piece of info, it may have been saved by someone else and may be reposted in the future. To avoid unpleasant consequences, always think twice before sharing online any information that may be sensitive or inappropriate.

Don’t share your login details. You may trust – or think you can trust – a person, but giving away your login info is the shortcut to getting hacked. Also, double check if a third party service that requires the use of your credentials is reliable and not being run by scammers.

Posting vacation dates is not a good idea. Your followers may be dying to know where and when you’re going, but modern-day burglars can use this information to break into your house while you’re out.

Be careful who you make friends with. It’s tempting to build a huge network of friends to show off your social skills. However, a person you add to the buddy list may be a spammer or, worse, a criminal on the lookout for your private information. If you don’t want certain people to follow you, use the “block” option to keep them away.

How to Boost Your Friendship Skills
How to Boost Your Friendship Skills

Still don’t have enough friends online? The problem may be on your side, so let’s see what makes or breaks your effort…

Don’t post a list of “don’ts”. This is an instant deal-breaker for many people who seek online friendships. Having your own preferences is fine… so long as you don’t impose them on others. Be more open-minded; some people may click with you even if they’re not your typical friend material. Get to know a person first, and then decide if you two are a good match for a friendship.

Stay positive. People are drawn to optimists and those who keep a positive attitude. Vice versa: if your online pal does nothing but complain, you’re unlikely to continue with your friendship. Try to be positive and supportive with your online buddies. They’ll definitely appreciate this and become more open in return.

Take the first step. Sitting and waiting for others to say “hi” isn’t effective. Grab the initiative and send the first message to the people you’d like to befriend. Not everyone will be a good match for you, so it’s best to try more than one person at a time. This way, you’ll boost your chances of a friendship. If a person doesn’t answer or shows they’re not interested, your best decision is to move on to someone else.

Making Friends Online: What Not To Do
Making Friends Online: What Not To Do

In this article, we’ll continue with the tips on how to avoid common mistakes and make more friends online.

Don’t forget about your profile. Start with a good username – it should reflect your personality, not just the name plus the year you were born in. Usernames are a common thing for internet forums and interest groups. With social media and networking sites, you may need to use your real name, which is fine too.

The next step will be writing a good profile description. No need for catchy one-liners that take hours, even days, to create. Make sure your text is well-structured, the style is appropriate, and it’s interesting to read. Also make sure that the text shows off your personality. You may want to include one or more of these things: hobbies and interests; life experiences, such as living in another country or volunteering; your views on friendship; what type of person you’re looking for. Avoid listing the negatives – people get easily put off by lists of “don’ts”, and you won’t get much traction for your profile.

Save time by using search tools. Many social media and networking sites will have a search tool. This tool will let you find potential friends based on certain factors (age, location, interests, etc.). A great timesaver if you’re looking for a certain personality type – or just a good match with your own.
