This course will develop your knowledge of safeguarding adults, including the principles of capacity and consent, different types of abuse and neglect and how to respond to a disclosure. You will learn the six principles of safeguarding and ways to minimise the risk of abuse, as well as the importance of record keeping and whistleblowing.
The course outlines the principles of safer recruitment, together with the different types of Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) checks and how to obtain them. By the end of this training, you will also be aware of the relevant legislation and responsibilities of statutory bodies.
In this course we discuss Deprivation of Liberty Safeguards (DoLS). DoLS was set to change to Liberty Protection Safeguards (LPS) in 2022 to deliver improved outcomes for people. However, LPS has been delayed beyond this parliament, so currently, there is no date for implementation and DoLS remains in place.

Module 1: Introduction to Safeguarding Adults
Defining 'an adult with safeguarding needs', the importance of safeguarding, case study, safeguarding adults legislation and the six principles of safeguarding.
Module 2: Understanding Capacity and Consent
What is consent, principles of the Mental Capacity Act, assumption of capacity, support to make decisions, unwise decisions, best interests, least restrictive option and Deprivation of Liberty Safeguards.
Module 3: Understanding the Types of Abuse
What is abuse, who carries out abuse, types of abuse, exploitation and minimising the risk of abuse.
Module 4: Responding to Concerns and Disclosures
What is a disclosure, responding to disclosures, post-disclosure practice and record keeping, reporting your concerns, allegations about staff members, responsibilities of statutory bodies, complaints and whistleblowing and what happens next.
Module 5: Principles of Safer Recruitment
What is safer recruitment, what is regulated activity, different types of DBS checks and obtaining a DBS check.
The online assessment is taken on completion of the training material. You will be asked 20 multiple choice questions with a pass mark of 80%. The answers are marked automatically so you will instantly know whether you have passed. If you don't pass don't worry! You can take the test as many times as you need with no extra charge.
This course is suitable for workers in any industry that interact with adults with safeguarding needs. Example job roles include those working in hospitals, GP surgeries, nursing homes, care homes, domiciliary care, religious organisations or community groups.
This course is written at an advanced level, meaning that you should already have some understanding of safeguarding. It is aimed at those who have specific responsibilities for safeguarding adults, such as managers.
If you are new to safeguarding training, or you are a worker without specific safeguarding responsibilities, then it’s recommended that you consider the Safeguarding Vulnerable Adults (SOVA) course which is less advanced and aimed at workers of all levels.

She has a vast range of safeguarding and child protection experience that includes roles and duties such as school governor, adult and child safeguarding responsibilities for Local Authorities and with the Criminal Cases Review Commission to review suspected miscarriages of justice.
