In UK workplaces, falls from height are the single biggest cause of workplace fatalities and are one of the main causes of serious injuries. They can cause harm to both those working at height and others in the workplace, such as members of the public. However, in most cases they are also avoidable. Therefore, it's important that anyone carrying out work at height activities, in any place, understands how to work safely and responsibly at height, to reduce the risk of a fall.

In UK workplaces, falls from height are the single biggest cause of workplace fatalities and are one of the main causes of serious injuries. Work at height can be extremely dangerous if not carried out correctly, however falls from height are, in most cases, avoidable. For this reason, anyone who works at height in any place, including a place at, or below, ground level, is required to undertake training to prove that they are competent, compliant and safe in their work.
If you are an employer or someone with responsibility for supervising others during work at height, then it is vital that you understand your duty of care to your employees according to the Work at Height Regulations 2005. This includes properly planning for work at height - including carrying out a risk assessment, providing suitable equipment and ensuring employees have received the necessary training, depending on the job.
As an employee, it's vital that you recognise when your employer is meeting their duty of care, and know what to do if they are not, to keep you and others in the working environment safe. You also have a responsibility to be able to cooperate with your employer to implement the control measures they choose for work at height. By taking this course, you will develop your knowledge of how to erect and use work at height equipment correctly and safely to reduce the risk of a fall.
Module 1: The Risks from Working at Height
This module introduces the risks associated with work at height and explains what an employee should expect from their employer in regards to managing this risk, in line with the Work at Height Regulations 2005. The module also explains employee duties under the regulations to ensure work at height is carried out safely and correctly. This module has optional content for employers, managers and supervisors that outlines their responsibilities, including how to carry out risk assessments.
Module 2: Avoiding, Preventing and Minimising Risks
This module introduces the hierarchy of control for working at height and explains the three levels of control: avoid, prevent and minimise. It explains how to implement the most appropriate control measures for work at height based on this hierarchy. It details how to erect and use a range of access equipment, including fall protection equipment, such as scaffolds and MEWPs, and fall mitigation equipment, such as safety nets and fall arrest harnesses. This module also explains when it is appropriate to use ladders and stepladders and how to use them safely.
Module 3: Selection of Work Equipment and Emergency Procedures
This module details how to select appropriate work access equipment and the factors that could affect this selection, including how to inspect equipment for safety and suitability. It then explains what employees should expect from their employer regarding emergency procedures for work at height and how employees can prepare themselves for performing a rescue.
The online assessment is taken on completion of the training material. You will be asked 20 multiple choice questions with a pass mark of 80%. The answers are marked automatically so that you’ll instantly know whether you passed. If you don't pass don't worry! You can take the test as many times as you need with no extra charge.
