Port Askaig 30 Year Old
Part of a very small batch, only three casks of Port Askaig 30 Year Old exist, with the youngest whisky having been distilled in 1984. Aged in American hogsheads, time has softened and sweetened this beautiful liquid but has also left lots of fantastic peat smoke, giving it a coastal smokiness.
Nose
Packed with flavour – there’s lots going on here. Rich honey sweetness, with background floral notes, white melon, barley sugar and bananas – both fresh and ripe, and foam sweets. With all of that is the expected Islay peat smoke, although restrained and elegant.
Palate
Full and generous, taking the flavours from the nose and building on them. The smoke is more evident, with rich wet peat and coal fires adding a sweet and dry layer that complements the fruit and allows a citrus thread to emerge – honey and lemon with a hint of the medicinal.
Finish
Initially intense, but slowly fading into a long, lingering sootiness, backed up by the palate’s fruitiness.
Comment
The long ageing of this whisky has rounded off some of the edges you can find in younger peated spirit, but has left more of the smoke than you might expect. A punchy and richly flavoured dram.
