All about this PAT Testing Awareness course

This course will expand your knowledge on PAT Testing and the safety aspects, risks and other factors that should be considered when selecting suitable portable electrical appliances and equipment. In our PAT Testing course you will consider the requirements for employee-owned and hired portable electrical appliances and equipment.

Our PAT testing course will introduce you to the electrical hazards that can result in fire, explosions, electrocutions and electric shock. You will also explore the requirements for reporting and recording incidents internally and externally.

You will also cover the different types of legislation that relate to electrical appliances and equipment. By the end of the course students will feel they have gained a greater understanding on PAT testing, how to identify and assess risks and the precautions that can be put into place to control and reduce the risk.

In order to complete the course, you must achieve 80% or more in the final multiple choice quiz.

You will earn 3 CPD points on completion of the course, this course will take around 3 hours to complete and the certificate will last for two years.

Units covered

  • Unit 1 – Introduction to PAT Testing – In our first unit of our PAT Testing course you will be introduced to portable appliance testing (PAT) and learn what PAT  is and what it includes. You will also be looking at what is meant by hazard and risk and explore what electricity is and the associated hazards and effects on the body. The unit will finish by covering the different types of legislation relating to electrical appliances and equipment.
  • Unit 2 –  Identifying and assessing risks – In this unit you will be introduced to the meaning of accidents, incidents (near misses) and hazards. You will also look at the meaning of risk assessments and what the law requires, as well considering why the risk assessment is important and who is responsible.
  • Unit 3 – Safe selection and use – This unit will look at the safety aspects, risks and other factors that should be considered when selecting suitable portable electrical appliances and equipment.  This unit will also consider the requirements for employee-owned and hired portable electrical appliances and equipment, as well as looking at the additional ways of reducing and controlling the risks.
  • Unit 4 – Inspections and testing – In this unit you will be introduced to inspection and testing, you will learn why they are required. You will also consider the different types of inspection and tests as well as exploring user checks, formal visual inspections and combined inspection and testing. In this unit you will also learn what happens when equipment fails a PAT test and some of the considerations with regards to equipment repairs.
  • Unit 5 – Emergency procedures – In our final unit of our PAT Testing course you will be looking at the electrical hazards that can result in fire, explosions, electrocution and electric shock. You will also look at the precautions that can prevent and control the risks. Finally you will consider the need for first aid in the event of electrocution, electric shock and other injuries as well as the legal duties and provisions that should be considered.
