Spirit In The Night may only have been Bruce Springsteen’s second single, but he was already well into his full cinematic stride. Bruce not only gives us a full cast of characters from Crazy Janey and Wild Billy to Hazy Davy and Killer, but he sets the scene for us down at Greasy Lake. Greasy Lake may have been fictitious (original E Street Band drummer, Vinnie Lopez always said it was an amalgamation of a couple of New Jersey hangouts) but in Spirit In The Night, it came alive more than countless real-life locations depicted in countless songs by writers that can only dream of having Bruce’s fire (which can’t start without a spark…) for lyrics.
