Port Charlotte MC:01 2009
Initially bottles for the travel retail market.
Over the years they've learnt that Port Charlotte works particularly well with sweet wine casks. The fruit and sweetness is a great balance for their smoky, evocative spirit. But this is the first time they've matured Port charlotte in Marsala casks - The legendary rich, unctuous wine from Sicily.
They use only the best casks available, and in this case the wood had previously held Marsala wine for 9 years. The result now is a glorious Autumnal whisky with tope notes of clove and seville orange, ripe peach and apricot - rose petals, and vanilla from the French Oak. Left to open in the glass they get more peach with salted caramel, the peat smoke a mist behind the spice and sweet fruit notes. Ultimately the tar and charred oak come through and you are transported. This is a feel good whisky, and Autumn walk in the woods then a good book by a roaring fire kind of whisky. From Sicily to Islay, to your glass.
